Abuja based lawyer, philanthropist and a seasoned politician Barrister Pelumi Olajengbesi gifts his former chauffeur, Dan Fulani, a car.
In his words from a post on Facebook page, Barrister Pelumi narrated how Dan Fulani served well during his (Pelumi Olajengbesi esq) tenure as SUG president in UNIABUJA. This gift came after Dan Fulani paid the lawyer a visit and narrated his ordeal.
He also called on fellow alumnus of the institution to remain in unity as it as always been.
PROUD GIFT TO DAN FUNLANI
There are certain names and personalities that stand out when I reflect on my undergraduate years in the University of Abuja, and one such person who shaped my university experience was Dan Fulani, who was then the Students Union Driver, known as the ‘aluta driver’.
I was elected Students Union President in an election that was very popular and had a lot of interest vested in the process but the will of the entire Students of the University of Abuja took pre-eminence, and I emerged. The school management donated a bus to the union and assigned Dan Fulani as the Driver from the school transport department.
Even though some of the students leaders out of stubbornness would rudely collect the key from Dan Fulani and drive the car the student way, Dan Fulani was such an understanding person who supported the Union throughout our time. I christened the bus ‘Aluta Missile’ as it was the fashion then that when you ‘sight’ me in the bus, it was for a particular struggle and engagement with the management of the University, fundamentally on issues that bothered on the welfare of the students.
Regrettably, I have just been informed that circumstances have recently led to Dan Fulani losing his livelihood in the driving role he held for years, one that provided for him and his family. He was sanctioned and summarily laid off by the University for probably being absent from work or a particular minor offence I cannot immediately verify.
Dan Fulani walked into my office in distress to narrate his ordeal without work and that he needed something to be doing. Thinking about the selfless services he rendered to the student body in my days, particularly one time when I mobilised against the school security officers and bike riders who had attacked one of our students, Ogun Samson for his radicalism against the University. I recall that we took laws into our hands in the interest of students such that having satisfied and protected the students during the day, I had to go begging in the night and reconcile with the CSO who was determined to punish all of us, particularly because some students had taken advantage of our action to loot and commits all kinds of atrocities.
I immediately called my guy Dipo who by the way has been with me since our days in the University of Abuja, to get me a particular small car parked in the house as a gift to Dan Fulani to use for local transport business before I decide on whether to go begging the University of Abuja on his matter, or cause trouble.
It is but a small token of my appreciation for his unwavering dedication and service all this time even as I hope that he recognises that this car represents more than just transportation; it signifies our gratitude for his tireless efforts then and now.
I am therefore making this post in the spirit of camaraderie to invigorate my fellow alumni, especially those who shared their university years with me to join in supporting Dan Fulani in their personal capacities. Let us continue to be men and women of goodwill, just as we were during our time on campus and take this opportunity to reflect on the bonds we forged and the impact we can make when we extend a helping hand.
Pelumi Olajengbesi Esq.
